  • Manatee UUF in Bradenton will host a week-long online silent auction from Feb. 7 to 14 (preview opens Jan. 31) and a yard sale on Feb. 7 (10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) at 322 15th St. W featuring items from travel to art.  The Bradenton Times

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Seattle-based SSA Marine has proposed a plan with Tampa-based Slip Knott LLC to build a cruise terminal on the Knott Cohen Tract near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, saying it will boost local business and create jobs while protecting natural sites (including the Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve).  FOX 13 Tampa Bay

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Concerns over phosphate mining persist as contaminants from Piney Point in Manatee County and the Tenoroc Fish Management Area in Polk County threaten local water and soil. Florida officials call for an updated regional phosphate environmental impact statement (EIS) to guide future permits.  The Bradenton Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Manatee County has partnered with community organizations to offer cold weather shelters as temperatures drop. The Salvation Army (1204 14th St. W.) and Under One Roof (407 57th Ave E.) in Bradenton operate normally today, with adjusted check-in times starting Sunday and MCAT providing transport from Turning Points.  The Bradenton Times
  • Indivisible Manatee held its first voter education meeting earlier this week at the downtown Bradenton Library with 80 residents in attendance — Scott Farrington explained that new voting rules require re-enrollment for Vote-By-Mail, and another session is scheduled for Feb. 17.  The Bradenton Times

  • The Pirates will begin spring training in Bradenton after signing Ryan O’Hearn to a two-year, $29 million contract — the largest for a hitter in club history — and he is set to play first base, corner outfield, and designated hitter as the team readies for a competitive season.  The Bradenton Times
