  • Local residents will soon compete in the annual Manatee County Donut Eating Championship as part of Manatee Humpday Day festivities at the county fair, uniting neighbors in a lighthearted contest.  ABC7
  • At the Manatee County Fair, the sheriff’s office won an 18-16 donut eating contest against North River Fire Department on Saturday at Peachy’s Baking Company, and the fair will take a brief break before final attendance figures are released.  ABC7
  • Manatee County and local groups are opening cold weather shelters as frigid temperatures hit. The Salvation Army in Bradenton began check-in Monday at 6 p.m. while Under One Roof opens today at 2:45 p.m. with MCAT rides at 2:30 p.m. from Turning Points — please share this safety resource.  Manatee County

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Strong geomagnetic storms affected the Suncoast on Monday, Jan. 26 following a surge in solar activity. Local agencies (including NOAA) monitored communications and satellite signals for possible interference.  ABC7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Manatee County has revised its long-term water plan and will draw 5 million gallons a day from the Peace River starting 2036 to supplement current supplies from Lake Manatee and groundwater due to rapid growth.  Bay News 9
  • Lawmakers are reviewing a proposal to transfer USF Sarasota-Manatee to New College—if approved, all campus facilities will shift by July 1 so students must attend classes in Tampa or St. Pete; critics worry this change may force long commutes while supporters say it would strengthen New College.  Bay News 9
  • Manatee County enhanced its lost pet database to help residents report and locate missing animals. The updated tool launched on Jan. 26 and offers a simple way for pet owners to search for lost pets countywide.  ABC7

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Florida Department of Health confirmed three measles cases in Florida this year, including two among young adults (ages 20 to 29) in Hillsborough and Manatee counties and one in St. Johns County.
