  • Cold weather shelters remain open today with The Salvation Army shelter opening at 6 p.m. at 1204 14th St. W and Under One Roof for women beginning at 2:45 p.m. at 407 57th Ave E — transit from Turning Points at 701 17th Ave W and services continuing through Thursday.  Manatee County

CULTURE NEWS

  • Oscura will host an Open Jazz Jam on Saturday featuring the Chaunces Trio, inviting musicians of all levels to join the session. The all-ages event (with guests under 18 requiring a parent) will take place at Oscura in Old Manatee with free parking available.  The Bradenton Times
  • The Shaelyn Band, a Florida-based touring act known for soulful blues, funk, and rock, is set to perform at Flamingo Bay Brewing Company today along Tamiami Trail — the venue offers on-site parking and a dog-friendly beer garden.  The Bradenton Times
  • Passerine brings its inventive mix of folk and bluegrass to Cottonmouth, Bradenton’s live music venue known for its southern soul cuisine and local art display.   • Ann Hunsader, a fourth-grade reading teacher at Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School in Bradenton, has spent 30 years inspiring a love of reading in her students and building close bonds with each one; she was recently nominated for the A+ Teacher award by a grateful parent.  Bay News 9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Suncoast nurseries are preparing for forecasted cold by advising homeowners to water plants the night before and cover sensitive bushes with frost cloth (Troyes Tropics expert). Palm trees need only watering, and cold-damaged ones should not be watered to avoid root rot.  ABC7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Manatee County Beach Patrol was named 2025 Beach Patrol of the Year by the Florida Beach Patrol Chiefs Association on Jan. 27. The award honored its lifesaving work on Coquina, Cortez and Manatee Public Beaches and in reuniting over 200 missing persons with their families.  Manatee County
  • At Tuesday's county meeting in Bradenton, commissioners defended the new hurricane-rated prefab kennels at the Bishop shelter after advocates urged a concrete block design and approved a free evaluation by the University of Florida Shelter Medicine Program (forming a task force), though a vote on trespassing charges failed.  The Bradenton Times
  • Manatee County partnered with the State and FDACS to protect 1,483 acres of farmland by purchasing conservation easements at Mossy Island Ranch and Thundercloud Ranch. The Board of County Commissioners approved spending up to $2 million on the project to preserve local agricultural lands for future generations.  Manatee County
  • The Southwest Florida Water Management District Governing Board declared a Modified Phase II Severe Water Shortage today due to a 13 inch rainfall deficit, requiring residents to water only one day a week and follow strict outdoor water restrictions until July 1.  The Bradenton Times

  • Legislators advanced a Medical Freedom bill Monday to ease school vaccine requirements amid rising measles cases that include one case in Manatee County linked to international travel — the bill still needs approvals from two committees before reaching the full Senate.  FOX 13 Tampa Bay
