ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crews are dredging Phillippi Creek to reduce sediment buildup and improve water flow in the area. The work will continue into the coming days to complete the planned improvements.  ABC7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Manatee County offices will close Monday, Feb. 16 for Presidents’ Day and trash, recycling and yard waste collections in unincorporated areas will be postponed one day with regular service resuming Feb. 23. Public libraries will be closed on Monday and reopen Tuesday, Feb. 17 while transit services and parks remain open.  Manatee County

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Pittsburgh Pirates begin their 58th spring training season in Bradenton on Wednesday, bringing an expected $40 — $45 million boost to the local economy. Their first home game is against the Tampa Bay Rays on Feb. 22 at LECOM Park.  ABC7
  • Girls flag football season kicked off on Monday, Feb. 9 at AdventHealth Training Center as over 3,000 athletes from local squads, including teams from Alonso, Brandon, Manatee, Robinson and Plant, competed in the eighth annual Preseason Classic. The tournament runs through Saturday, Feb. 15 and follows the NCAA's new flag football designation to boost youth sports.  FOX 13 Tampa Bay
