COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Parrish Civic Association’s Heritage Festival and Chili Cook-Off is set for Saturday, March 7 at the Florida Railroad Museum with a free heritage parade from 10 to 11 a.m. and a family festival featuring food trucks, craft tents, and live music from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  The Bradenton Times

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A sailor was rescued from rough seas off Venice on Feb. 24 after heavy waves left him struggling — local rescuers helped him return safely to shore.  ABC7

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Powel Crosley Estate Foundation and Manatee County Government will host free self-guided and docent-supported tours of the historic estate on March 3 and 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors can tour the mansion and grounds with no reservations or admission required.  Manatee County
  • Parker Barrow, a blues-infused Southern rock band led by Megan Kane (vocals) and Dylan Turner (drums) with guitarist Alex Bender, will perform live at Cottonmouth in Bradenton, which offers southern soul cuisine and local art on its patio.  The Bradenton Times
  • Faith and Freedom Fest brings worship, live music, and family fun to the Manatee County Fairgrounds today. The event begins at 1:00 p.m. with an opening prayer by Pastor Craig King and will feature several acts until gates close at 6:00 p.m.  The Bradenton Times
  • Concrete Edgar, a Bradenton band inspired by the late Patti Brainard, will play live at Drift In AMI — Anna Maria Island's historic bar on Bridge Street — as the bar celebrates 101 years today, offering music, bar games, karaoke, and bingo.  The Bradenton Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mote Marine warns boaters today that low temperatures are stressing local marine animals and advises extra caution on nearby waters. The research group hopes the advisory helps prevent harm to wildlife.  ABC7
  • Mote Marine Laboratory reported more cold-stressed marine animals in coastal Southwest Florida and urged boaters to report stranded wildlife at 888-345-2335. The lab advises not to touch affected animals (reporting hotline available 24/7) and recommends slowing down in protection zones.  ABC7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Anna Maria and Cortez will vote on March 10 for a tax to fund West Manatee Fire and Rescue District’s plan to open a second station on Anna Maria Island—an effort that will add five firefighters, address equipment shortages, and reduce response times.  ABC7
  • State Sen. Jim Boyd filed an amendment to a coastal resiliency bill to restrict dredging at Terracia Aquatic Preserve and block a proposed cruise port, aiming to protect Tampa Bay's coastline; the measure awaits full legislative and gubernatorial approval to take effect on July 1.  ABC7

  • Payton Mangay-Ayam overcame an early injury to lead her Braden River High School (BRHS) weightlifting team to its first state championship, lifting 145 pounds in the snatch and 190 pounds in the clean and jerk. She also earned an individual state title that highlights her perseverance.  ABC7
