COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Kart 4 Kids Pro/Am race at Palmetto’s T-4 Kartplex drew hundreds of supporters and top drivers on Feb. 26 to raise funds for Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. The annual event — started in 2012 — has grown to support life-saving equipment.  FOX 13 Tampa Bay
  • Douglas Brian Dahlquist (62) of Bradenton peacefully passed after a battle with cancer on Feb. 19; his family will celebrate his life at First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, Mar. 7 at 11:00 a.m. followed by a luncheon with his favorite selections.  The Bradenton Times
  • Goodwill Manasota has reached 100 million pounds of donated goods diverted from landfills while supporting free job training, veteran services, and food collection programs in the area. The nonprofit operates 10 retail stores and 25 donation centers (with two new sites planned) to boost community services.  ABC7

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Powel Crosley Estate Foundation and county officials invite residents to free, docent-supported tours at the historic estate on March 3 and 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event offers a look at Crosley’s radios, sports car and memorabilia – a nod to local history.  The Bradenton Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents near Terra Ceia Bay are opposing plans for a cruise ship terminal near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, and lawmakers recently passed a Senate bill that may block the deep dredging needed for the project. The proposal faces strong local pushback.  ABC Action News
  • Anna Maria’s city pier rebuild is about 75% complete and already drawing crowds and local business interest. The project, costing between $7.2M & $8M, received funds from Manatee County, FEMA & the state, with the city financing it through a bank loan until reimbursements arrive.  ABC7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Retired NYPD officers and other 9/11 first responders met at the Fraternal Order of Police lodge in Bradenton where new legislation guarantees lifetime healthcare and retroactive benefits for illnesses from their service. SPORTS NEWS

  • The World Series of Pro Mod drag racing event is underway at the Bradenton Motorsports Park, featuring 80 professional drivers competing in chip-draw shootouts for $150,000 and a championship belt — the event also offers autograph sessions, live music, and food.  ABC7
  • The Bradentucky Bombers will return to the Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex for a roller derby bout against Fort Myers on Saturday, Feb. 28 with doors opening at 4:30 p.m., the bout starting at 5:00 p.m., and advance tickets ($10) plus $15 door tickets available.  The Bradenton Times
