This week, a Women’s History Month series honors four local pioneers (Bertha Palmer, Mary Ward, Eleanor McCollum, and Karen Bell) who shaped Florida’s economy by modernizing agriculture in Sarasota, launching a pottery enterprise, sustaining ranching traditions, and preserving the working waterfront in Cortez.

Palmetto Community Redevelopment Agency officials are working to restore the Manatee River by installing 76 reef clusters (380 concrete reef balls) to improve water clarity and support oyster habitats.

They plan to expand the restoration and work with lawmakers to protect the active river zone.
