COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tunnel to Towers Foundation will host its Steel Across America Tour at Booker Elementary (in the local community) with programs honoring military service. The event will feature activities designed to engage residents and foster local pride.  ABC7
  • Local food banks will launch summer meal programs next week as students lose free school meals when classes end. The program, supported by local school departments and USDA funding, aims to serve nearly 17,000 children and families in need.  ABC7

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Florida transportation officials plan to install detection systems that alert engineers & law enforcement if a wrong-way driver enters I-75, following a deadly crash that killed a 21-year-old Bradenton woman.  ABC7

  • Booker Elementary will soon display a piece of the World Trade Center in an educational exhibit that links students to a significant piece of history.  ABC7

  • Emma E. Booker Elementary will host a World Trade Center Tour (Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s Steel Across America Tour) to give students a closer look at history as part of an upcoming educational event.  ABC7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Manatee County Commissioners approved $100,000 to secure Old Memphis Cemetery in Palmetto with fencing, lighting & cameras; a cleanup and beautification effort will begin on Saturday, May 23 at 9 a.m. to restore the historic site.  The Bradenton Times
  • Manatee County will open the Lasting Manatee Intake Center on June 1 to help residents apply for the Home Recovery Program after hurricane damage. The center is at 1012 Manatee Ave. West and will offer in-person assistance Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The Bradenton Times
  • Manatee County commissioners approved $100,000 for new fencing and cameras at Old Memphis Cemetery in Palmetto after vandals damaged 17 graves earlier this month. Volunteers and local donations are already helping repair the damage (including donated concrete and labor).  ABC7
