COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City officials announced a multi-million-dollar expansion of LECOM Park that will add three baseball fields, extra parking, a football field, a splash pad, and a Miracle Field (for children and athletes with disabilities). A new field may open before spring training in 2027, with the full project complete in 2028.  ABC7

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in the Bradenton-Sarasota-Venice area rose 61 cents in one month to an average of $4.516 per gallon for regular gas today (AAA data shows a national average at its highest in nearly four years). Drivers face increased costs as Memorial Day weekend approaches.  ABC7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • El Nino watch is in effect with an 82% chance it develops by summer, according to NOAA. Forecasts indicate a slightly below-average hurricane season on the Suncoast, though any storm could still threaten the area (as strong wind shear may break up storms).  ABC7

SPORTS NEWS

  • Parrish Community High School's Lady Bulls will compete in the state semifinals today at 1:00 p.m. in Longwood after winning their regional final 1 to 0 against Land O'Lakes. The team prepares to face Pace High School for a rematch of last year's state semifinal loss.  ABC7
  • The Braden River High Lady Pirates softball team has a 23 to 3 record and will compete in the state semifinals against Niceville Friday at 10:00 a.m. in Longwood — the team, which defeated Gulf Coast in the regional final, is eager to keep its dream season alive.  ABC7
