- ➤ A water spout was seen off Anna Maria Island on May 30th at 11:54 a.m.—weather officials checked the skies and nearby waters to ensure coastal safety. ABC7
- ➤ Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch reported a busy week as volunteers recorded eight adult disorientations and set up hay bales — an organic barricade — to keep nesting turtles off roads and parking lots. Volunteers rescued a determined nesting female loggerhead from a pool on Memorial Day weekend and urged residents to use low, red lighting to protect the turtles. ABC7
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Manatee County released a Draft Action Plan for $252,711,000 in CDBG—DR funds and invites residents to submit comments through June 20 by web, email, or mail. The plan details how funds will help rebuild infrastructure and support vulnerable communities, and public hearings will be held on June 3 in Bradenton and on June 12 in Palmetto before the final plan is sent to HUD on June 30. - ➤ Manatee County is reviewing the proposed Ninth Street Apartments project at 5420 10th Lane East in Bradenton, which would develop 134 units on a 6.71-acre parcel that partly lies in a 500-year floodplain — residents are invited to submit written comments by June 17 to help evaluate alternatives and minimize impacts. The review follows federal floodplain management rules to assess how the project may affect the floodplain. Manatee County
- ➤ Manatee County’s Emergency Operation Center upgraded its Peregrine software to let teams access live camera feeds and combine data on rivers, streams, and structures in one screen—officials say the tool helped speed disaster declarations after past storms and will aid impact assessments for state and FEMA as hurricane season begins. This new system will allow faster response times during emergencies. ABC7
