Good morning, Bradenton. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 8th of June.
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Derrell Scott, 54, was sentenced to 17 years in prison for shooting a man and wounding a bystander at Loaded Barrel Tavern on July 26 — he pleaded no contest to two counts of attempted second-degree murder and will serve 10 years of probation after his incarceration — Bradenton police said. WFLA
- ➤ Bradenton police said on June 1 just before 7 p.m. that a man was caught on camera removing a gray e-bike with black saddlebags and a mirror on the left side from a Publix parking lot and riding away as if he owned it — anyone who sees him or the bike is asked to call police. ABC7
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ During National Fishing and Boating Week, locals learn about Florida’s Gulf Coast fishing roots that began with early Spanish ranchos drying fish for shipment—stories that shaped local tourism and communities. The legacy is remembered through figures like Salty Sol and Frances Livingston, whose methods even today echo the region’s historic charm. The Bradenton Times
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On June 3, the League of Women Voters of Manatee County Government Committee observed the commission meeting that reviewed key matters such as employee recognitions, a water system award, and bond measures for a charter school. Commissioners approved resolutions for animal shelter projects, a draft citizen participation plan for HUD grants, and a new ordinance on retail animal sales — addressing community services and public input. The Bradenton Times
- ➤ Maria Lulu Martinez, a 22-year-old college graduate, was detained by ICE last month and her family is holding a press conference to speak about her transfer from a detention center in Miami, Krome and a facility in Texas. She came to the Sarasota area from Mexico when she was 12 and recently earned an associate's degree in business administration while her family said they cannot visit her. WFLA
- ➤ On Thursday, Manatee County Commissioners voted unanimously to raise impact fees to 100 percent of the consultant rate instead of the slower increase set earlier. The board made the change after noting that the prior plan would cost potential infrastructure funds and after developer objections with Commission Chair George Kruse warning that rising state costs were inflating expenses. The Bradenton Times
- ➤ Public records show Commissioner Bob McCann moved on May 6 to cancel a reimbursement agreement for a planned roundabout at University Parkway, Legacy Boulevard and Deer Drive because community members felt it was forced on them—SMR CEO Rex Jensen later disputed the claim in an open letter. The Bradenton Times
