Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 14th of June.
Good morning, Bradenton.
🎓 Education
On June 10, the Manatee School Board held a meeting observed by the League of Women Voters Education Issues Committee where leaders discussed awards, policy updates, job changes, and plans for a superintendent search.
The board set a timeline that begins with advertising on June 16 and includes interviews in August—public comments raised concerns about school safety and administrative actions that will guide future steps.
🏛️ Government
Florida Highway Patrol used the private surveillance network Flock Safety—scanning license plates for immigration enforcement—for over 250 searches between March 13 and May 5.
Officials say this shift has reduced available troopers for road safety while civil rights advocates warn it increases fear in immigrant communities.
Manatee County Government kicked off its FY26 budget process with three work sessions from Monday through Wednesday, where County Administrator Charlie Bishop recommended a $1.37 billion annual budget with 131 new positions and a Capital Improvement Plan of $2.46 billion.
The process will continue with further reviews and public hearings this summer—before final adoption and the fiscal year start on October 1—ensuring the new budget moves forward.
