CRIME NEWS

  • On July 20, 33 miles off the Manatee County coast, Douglas Naeher was accused of beating his wife during a fishing trip—she managed to reach a dock for help after being dragged in the water, and he was arrested on July 21 for attempted first-degree murder.  WFLA
  • Deputies responded Tuesday afternoon to a shooting at a home on the 12300 block of Baypointe Terrace in Bradenton where 76-year-old Andrew Douglas was fatally shot in the neck as his 35-year-old son, Ian Douglas, was showing him a handgun—investigators said the shooting was accidental and charged Ian with manslaughter by culpable negligence—and he was booked into Manatee County Jail.  FOX 13 Tampa Bay

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Manatee County Commissioners approved the $13.5 million purchase of former Mixon Fruit Farms on Tuesday — a 39-acre property that includes a store, event pavilion, commercial kitchen, and house, along with a vote to add four full-time staff for site management. County officials said the site will host weddings, agritourism events, and new educational programs, ensuring the property remains a vital community asset.  The Bradenton Times
  • Gov. Ron DeSantis announced an annual Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday that will run from August 1 to August 31—Florida consumers will not pay sales tax on school supplies under $50, learning aids under $30, select apparel under $100, or personal computers and accessories under $1,500 for home use.  Bay News 9

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Palmetto officials selected a partnership with Mosaic Development from St. Petersburg and NDC Development from Bradenton to build a six-story apartment complex on the Manatee River, costing $53 million and featuring 152 units, retail space, and amenities on 3.4 acres. The developers plan to complete the project before the end of 2028—despite past public opposition to selling the property.  The Bradenton Times
