Good morning, Bradenton. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 3rd of August.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Oscura will host SoulSwitch, a modern hard rock band from Orlando performing today at 7 p.m. at the reimagined Old Manatee venue, where tickets cost $10 in advance and $15 at the door — the band is known for energetic live shows and repeated festival appearances.  The Bradenton Times
  • Mattison’s Riverwalk Grille is hosting a blues brunch with the Blues Pig Band playing classic blues tunes from Chicago, Texas, and New Orleans—a tradition since the band first formed in Bradenton in 1997. The group features lead singer Sizzlin’ Steve, returning member Iron Mike on bass, Jeff Stern on drums, and Ms. Roberta Rodgers on backup vocals.  The Bradenton Times
  • Jorge Valentine grew up in Ridge Manor and learned to play guitar after receiving his first one from his grandfather, drawing inspiration from country and rock music. He built his career with Clearwater-based cover band Crossfire Creek and now performs live at Tarpon Bay Grill & Tiki Bar (a popular local venue with waterfront dining) sharing his original songs with fans.  The Bradenton Times
  • Cortez is one of Florida's few working fishing villages where weathered cottages and old fish houses show a long history tied to the sea. A historic marker by the Star Fish Company explains how the village grew from its early days as Hunter's Point and rebuilt after a 1921 hurricane, keeping its fishing legacy alive.  The Bradenton Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On July 29th, the Manatee County School Board held a meeting to review and approve the 2025—2026 tentative millage rate and budget while the League of Women Voters of Manatee County Education Issues Committee observed the board’s practices and raised questions about scheduling. The board approved key motions unanimously at 5—0 and set a vote on the final millage and budget for September 9 as they also discussed the Superintendent search and public comments.  The Bradenton Times
