- ➤ Authorities are investigating the disappearance of 18-year-old Giovonni Pelletier, who was last seen leaving a car on I-75 near State Road 70 in Manatee County when he acted erratically as he headed to visit family in Brevard County; detectives from the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office and Brevard County are working together to locate him. - ➤ A report published Aug. 4 shows that Suncoast renters must earn at least $35 an hour to afford a two-bedroom apartment—this reflects the growing gap between local wages and rising housing costs. ABC7
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ ABC Action News anchor Wendy Ryan interviewed Interim Superintendent Kevin Chapman about his role managing Manatee County schools, discussing rising student enrollment, staffing, safety and new policies. The superintendent said the district will enact changes before school starts on August 11 — steps aimed at better preparing for the new year. ABC Action News

- ➤ Manatee County will open the final phase of the 44th Avenue extension on Saturday morning, Aug. 9 — after more than 12 years of work, the new road is expected to reduce daily traffic on routes 64 and 70 and ease trips to the Gulf. ABC7
- ➤ FDOT said the ramp from I-75 southbound to US-301 was closed from 11 p.m. last night until 5 a.m. today due to construction—drivers were advised to use State Road 64 as a detour. A similar closure will occur Friday night—expect delays on alternate routes. ABC7

- ➤ David Matoma (a talented pitcher from Uganda) traveled over 7,500 miles in 2023 to join the Bradenton Marauders and chase his dream of becoming the first MLB player from his country.
