CRIME NEWS

  • The Pelletier family is urging FBI involvement after local law enforcement was deemed too slow when a body presumed to be teen Giovanni Pelletier was found in a retention pond near I-75 and state road 70 in Manatee County—claiming that gang activity may be involved and demanding a full, transparent investigation.  FOX 13 Tampa Bay
  • Deputies responded at 8 a.m. Tuesday to a Silver Lake home where 21-year-old Dakota Hayes sustained two gunshot wounds after his brother, 24-year-old Willie Hayes, shot him upon witnessing him stab his girlfriend—deputies later found a 23-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds inside and both victims were taken to the hospital with their conditions expected to survive.  ABC Action News
  • Manatee County detectives investigated a shooting and stabbing that occurred on Tuesday morning in a Silver Lake home in Bradenton when a 21-year-old man was found with two gunshot wounds and 24-year-old Willie Hayes reportedly shot his brother after seeing him stab his 23-year-old girlfriend—both victims were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive.  FOX 13 Tampa Bay

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Florida Power and Light reached an 11th-hour agreement in principle with groups that opposed its proposed four-year, $10 billion rate increase — the utility will finalize and announce the settlement by Aug.20. Critics including AARP Florida say the deal lacks transparency and may lead to higher bills for customers.  The Bradenton Times

  • Manatee County School District has narrowed its search for the next superintendent to two Florida women—Dr. Laurie Breslin and Dr. Misty Mathis. The finalists will have one-on-one interviews with board members next week and the public can meet them at Manatee Technical College on Aug. 18 at 6:15 p.m.  ABC7

  • Manatee County crews are nearly finished clearing trees and debris from waterways clogged by last year's hurricanes—using a Menzi Muck Machine to keep water flowing freely and prevent future flooding.  FOX 13 Tampa Bay
