CRIME NEWS

  • Bradenton police warned drivers after school zone cameras caught 50 speeders on the first day of school, issuing $100 tickets to those going more than 10 mph over the limit—one driver reached 78 mph in a 15 mph zone.  FOX 13 Tampa Bay
  • The medical examiner positively identified 18-year-old Giovanni Pelletier's decomposed body from a retention pond on Aug. 8th—detectives are pursuing multiple leads while toxicology tests are pending and no foul play has been reported.  ABC Action News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Manatee County Utilities crews unearthed a rare Jefferson Ground Sloth claw while digging a trench for a waterline, and Bishop Museum of Science and Nature took the find for study and preservation—it will soon be on display.  ABC7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson and Senate President Ben Albritton announced that Florida allocated $38 million from the budget for the Farmers Feeding Florida program to buy extra crops and milk from local farms and support food banks. The program has already prevented 170,000 gallons of milk waste and will track spending closely—ensuring taxpayer dollars are used properly.  WFLA
  • Local government leaders in Manatee are fighting a new state law (SB 180) that stops local officials from making stricter growth rules, and they say it harms plans to protect wetlands and manage storm recovery. Officials are planning to sue to overturn the law, arguing it gives developers too much power over local decisions.  The Bradenton Times
  • Mayor Gene Brown wished families, teachers and staff a safe start as students head back to school and met with police, fire and EMS crews to remind drivers to slow down in school zones. He also welcomed Councilman Schuessler and looks forward to working with him to build on Bradenton's progress.  The Bradenton Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • Baseball pitcher Seth Hernandez joined the Pirates on July 26 and is learning to live in Bradenton—he trains at Pirate City with new teammates while getting used to the humid weather. The Corona High School star, who signed a $7.25 million bonus, said he will work hard as he starts his pro career.  The Bradenton Times
