CULTURE NEWS

ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The University of Florida launched a two-year program using a $626,000 USDA grant to help 30 beekeepers turn honey and beeswax into small businesses. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ At a special school board meeting on August 15th, board members voted three to two to replace Dr. Wilhoit's recommended termination with 20 work days without pay, a one-year probationary contract, reassignment to a role without student supervision and six hours of training—actions that raised concerns about staff protection and policy adherence. Observers questioned whether the board’s decision would prevent future misconduct and encourage proper behavior among employees. The Bradenton Times
- ➤ Ryan Foster and his wife drive their two sons to Palm View Elementary because Florida law does not allow bus service for students living within two miles, and the heavy traffic on U.S. 19 in north Palmetto makes walking unsafe—especially in the afternoon when school lets out. They hope the school district will add a bus stop near their home to ease safety concerns and eliminate the need for daily driving. Bay News 9
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Yesterday, Hurricane Erin intensified into a catastrophic Category 5 storm with 160 mph winds and was located 105 miles northeast of Anguilla while moving west-northwest at 20 mph. The National Hurricane Center expects the storm to double or triple in size by midweek — its track will decide if it impacts the U.S. East Coast. The Bradenton Times
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council began its Coastal Master Plan in May to map flood risk for seven coastal counties and propose resiliency projects such as living shorelines and improved stormwater systems in areas like Progress Village—efforts that aim to help local governments secure future funding. The four-year plan will reduce long-term flood damage by guiding project development for the region. Bay News 9
- ➤ Manatee County will start a new trash service featuring 96-gallon Big Bins for once-weekly pickup beginning Oct. 6, and a local household recently test drove the bin—reporting minimal odor and easy movement—to help assess the change. Officials say the update will reduce truck trips and offer options like swapping for smaller bins or scheduling curbside pickup for those in need. The Bradenton Times
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ St. Petersburg College will soon begin its third Applied Mental Health Certificate class for first responders, teaching mental wellness, peer support, and self-care techniques to help them deal with tough incidents.
