COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local businesses met on Monday at Anna Maria Oyster Bar with One Stop Housing and the Bradenton Area Economic Development Corporation to plan Forest Cove—a project that will provide 154 affordable apartments for local employees. Employers like Goodwill Manasota will offer lower-cost rent as construction begins and the project is expected to take about two years.  ABC7

CRIME NEWS

  • During the first week of school, new automated cameras recorded 336 drivers speeding in Bradenton school zones during school hours, and officers said offenders received $100 tickets by mail—cameras will remain active during the school year.  WFLA

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Manatee Village 1887 Church is one of 11 historical sites under threat in 2025 per the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation and Friends of the Manatee Village plan to bring experts to repair the building — including a new roof — while preserving its unique history from past yellow fever challenges.  Bay News 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • School board members interviewed the top two candidates, Dr. Laurie Breslin (an internal candidate with long local ties) and Dr. Misty Mathis from Nassau County, for the fifth superintendent role in less than 12 years, and a final decision will be made next week.  Bay News 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Low-income and senior Bradenton homeowners are now eligible for up to $10,000 in hurricane safety upgrade grants through the My Safe Florida Home program—grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis with seniors eligible from August 4 and other low-income homeowners from August 18 while additional tiers open in September. The program, supported by $280 million in state funding, requires an initial home inspection and approved contractor details for the upgrades.  WFLA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Florida Blue and BayCare are working on a new contract to secure Medicare Advantage coverage—if no agreement is reached by Sept. 30, patients will need to change providers starting Oct. 1. Patients should keep scheduled appointments and consider switching plans from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 if the terms change.  WFLA
