BUSINESS NEWS

  • On August 21, the Manatee Chamber of Commerce held its annual awards gala at the Bradenton Area Convention Center to honor local small businesses and nonprofits for growth, customer service, and job creation—Credit Union 1 was the presenting sponsor and six winners were selected from 32 finalists out of more than 200 nominations.  ABC7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Manatee County Schools installed the new Evolv weapons detection system in every middle school to screen students faster and with less intrusion—two trained guardians now monitor the system daily. The system will also be used at after-school events—helping to maintain campus safety.  ABC7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The League of Women Voters of Manatee County observed the County Commission meeting on August 19 and noted issues with a failed motion to end roundabout contract talks—along with discussions on the port budget, opioid funding, and a proposed library study. The meeting revealed clear citizen complaints and commissioner disagreements over transparency and proper agenda procedures.  The Bradenton Times
  • Manatee County Commissioners canceled Thursday’s land use meeting that was to vote on reversing cuts to wetland protections and the urban service boundary—staff held a session on Tuesday to take public comment on continuing the items.  The Bradenton Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials warn that Vibrio vulnificus—a flesh-eating bacteria thriving in warm coastal waters—is causing deadly infections this summer and prompting Bradenton beachgoers to exercise caution. The CDC advises covering open wounds and avoiding raw shellfish to lower the risk of infection.  FOX 13 Tampa Bay
