Good morning, Bradenton. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 27th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ananda Farm reopened in Terra Ceia and launched its fall festival today — the event offers a pumpkin patch, haystacks, mazes, and a corn pit for family fun and is open Fridays through Sundays. The farm was created by longtime friends who honor co-owner Kristy Boss by bringing a Midwest spirit to the Suncoast.  ABC7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Sept. 26, 2024, Hurricane Helene hit Tropic Isles and damaged roads and parks, causing flat tires and a chaotic scene recalled by resident Rick Kropp and maintenance supervisor Tom Tonich — with the marina and park now restored — while some homes still need repair.  ABC7
  • Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine started on September 26 in the Atlantic and is expected to become a tropical storm over the weekend with warnings for the Bahamas. It will move near Florida’s east coast and bring high surf and strong currents—while Hurricane Humberto grew into a major hurricane and is likely to reach Category 4 by early Monday while staying far to our east.  FOX 13 Tampa Bay

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new Florida law called Trooper’s Law will take effect Oct. 1 and makes it a third-degree felony to restrain or abandon a dog during a declared disaster or evacuation — violators may face up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Manatee County Animal Welfare hopes the law will lower the two annual cases of tied-up animals during hurricanes.  Bay News 9
  • Manatee County is considering a plan to crack down on illegal adult arcades after a media investigation found strip-mall casinos violating state gambling laws and frustrating law enforcement. Commissioner Tal Siddique will propose new licensing rules at the Oct. 7 board meeting to allow for stricter inspections and easier shutdowns of these operations.  The Bradenton Times
  • In late August, Chief Josh Cramer promoted eleven Bradenton Police Department officers to new ranks, making it the largest promotion in over five years — the ceremony was viewable on METV. The promoted officers, including local leaders like Assistant Chief Brian Thiers and Captain Dennis Stahley, now hold higher roles in patrol and investigations.  The Bradenton Times
  • During the Anna Maria meeting on Thursday, September 26, Mayor Mark Short vetoed an ordinance to ban swimming at Bean Point because its loophole caused confusion for law enforcement—officials instead retained a no‐swim advisory and planned to add warning signs after recent drowning tragedies.  ABC7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo said starting early December, school vaccine rules for hepatitis B, chickenpox, Hib and pneumococcal vaccines will end because parents have the right to choose—he dismissed worries about a lack of research. His predecessor, Dr. Scott Rivkees, said the change is a plan to lower vaccine protection and warned it may put sick and vulnerable people at risk.  The Bradenton Times
  • A Manatee County mother of three said she had an above-the-knee amputation after delays in care at Manatee Memorial Hospital on July 2 that she believes could have been avoided with faster treatment. She has filed a lawsuit and now seeks accountability as her family faces new challenges.  WFLA
