- ➤ The former sheriff’s office has become Under One Roof Gateway South, a shelter where 40 women will soon stay to overcome addiction, homelessness, and trauma. Funding came partly from opioid settlement money & HUD HOME-ARP, and the public got a first look on Wednesday. Bay News 9
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Officials will host a ribbon cutting—complete with guided tours—ahead of the Mote Science Education Aquarium’s grand opening, inviting local residents to explore its new exhibits and hands-on learning spaces. ABC7
- ➤ Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium held a ribbon cutting on Friday to honor decades of support for its new Science Education Aquarium, which will open on Oct. 8 to offer free STEM learning to over 70,000 students each year. The 146,000-square-foot facility at 225 University Town Center Drive features exhibits of sharks, rays, manatees, and otters, praised by local officials + donors. ABC7
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Starting Oct. 6, unincorporated Manatee County will replace small garbage cans with a free 96-gallon rolling bin and combine trash, recycling, and yard waste collections into one day a week—county officials say the change will help lower costs, improve safety, and reduce traffic. ABC7
- ➤ On November 1, the League of Women Voters will hold a rally at Riverwalk Pavilion — Rossi Park, 452 3rd Ave W — in Bradenton where speakers will talk about digital advocacy and community leadership while food trucks serve snacks. The Bradenton Times
- ➤ Manatee County is seeking a citizen with expertise in accounting, finance, information technology, economics, auditing, or human resources to fill an open seat on the Government Efficiency Liaison Committee—formed after a resignation—that meets monthly for one year. Applicants must apply online by October 24 and the new member will start meetings on November 10 at 10 a.m. Manatee County
- ➤ Manatee County plans to expand ferry stops to ease traffic on and off Anna Maria Island with new stops in Coquina South, near a preserve by the Palmetto Marriott, and possibly near the Green Bridge—while repairs are made to the damaged city pier from the 2024 hurricane season. Commissioner Tal Siddique said the ferry currently removes over 10,000 cars a month, and local partners will be consulted for final plans. ABC7

- ➤ The Cleveland Cavaliers are training at IMG Academy on the Suncoast for their upcoming season—marking their second straight year in Florida as the team prepares after last season's playoff exit.
