Good morning, Bradenton. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 16th of April.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Sea turtle patrols began Tuesday morning on Anna Maria Island to search for nests ahead of the season starting May 1. Officials warn that missing sand dunes leave beaches exposed to bright lights—confusing hatchlings and making it harder for them to reach the Gulf.  WFLA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Manatee County ended fluoridating water after its system broke in 2021 following a 5-1 vote by the county commission on Tuesday; Commissioner Amanda Ballard cited a study linking fluoride to lower IQ and high repair costs while critics worry about dental decay in some residents.  ABC7
  • Manatee County officials have set aside $5.6 million to help One Stop Housing build 156 affordable housing units at Forest Cove in Bradenton—this project is expected to eventually serve over 300 working families. The board also bought a 93-acre site for stormwater work and received $3.1 million in federal funds to repair Coquina Beach to how it was before Hurricane Idalia.  The Bradenton Times
  • At the April 9 meeting, the Bradenton City Council reviewed a proposal to install a temporary lift station—needed to shut down the old Lift Station 13 and kick off the Lift Station 3 Expansion Project estimated at $6 million.
