  • On June 4th, coastal residents attended a flood-proofing seminar in Lakewood Ranch where local resident Jeff Fuller shared his DIY tips—like installing backwater valves and using seal-and-peel caulk—to help keep floodwaters out during hurricane season, and attendees such as George Haralampoudis and Cynthia Olcott said last year’s storms left them unprepared.  FOX 13 Tampa Bay

CRIME NEWS

  • Derrell Scott, 54, was sentenced to 17 years in prison after he shot a man and wounded a woman at the Loaded Barrel Tavern in Bradenton last year — he pleaded no contest to two counts of second-degree attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and he will be on probation for 10 years.  ABC7

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Florida Maritime Museum and Cortez Village Historical Society will host a free family event called Summer Social on Saturday, June 14 from 10 am to 12:30 pm on the Cortez Cultural Center grounds. The event features scavenger hunts, sponge sailboat making, fishing-themed story time, and a ribbon cutting for a new fisher-gnome community + free parking is available, though the museum building will be closed for repairs.  The Bradenton Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Manatee County is offering self-service sandbag locations at parks and community centers, including sites in Palmetto, Bradenton, and Myakka City, through November 30 to help residents prepare for severe weather — residents must bring their own shovels while bags and sand are provided until supplies last.  The Bradenton Times

  • Will Taylor is having a productive second season in Bradenton for the Pirates with a .333 average, recording 28 hits, two homers, 11 RBIs, and seven stolen bases in 25 games. The 21-year-old, known for his respectful demeanor and multi-sport background from Clemson and a small South Carolina town, may soon move up in the Pirates’ system—an exciting prospect for local fans.  The Bradenton Times
